Snowmaking...Christmas Eve

New update: Christmas Eve
We are making snow not the best temps yet, but we have to improve what yesterday did to us. It is just to bad because the mountain was in such great shape. The skiing and riding is not bad but it is not as good as it was....we will be running all night and hopefully tomorrow.

We will be doing a lot of hit and run so we can cover more terrain. This is what we are good at, so now we have to go to work. Tonight we are on HBK, Minya, Belt, Wayout, Lower Crossover, Racers, Ike, Mossy, Lower Madison.

On Christmas Day, we will move to Upper K27, Eastside Drive, Milky Way, Cliff and others. Lets see what happens with the weather.

Merry Xmas and hope for some cold temps

Holiday Update from Snowmaking

Merry Christmas And Happy Holidays from all from the Snowmakers....here is your Holiday update.

Saturday morning, December 22: we just shut the snowmaking guns down for a few days because ol' mother nature is not in the Christmas spirit of giving good tidings and cheer, but the snowmakers will give that to all who ski and ride.

Starting Monday, at some time thru the day, we will fire up the guns for what we at Hunter are known for and the BEST AT: a speedy recovery from the wraths of the weather Gods. We will be moving all over the mountain getting back into the shape that we are in right now with some of the best skiing and riding in years for the holidays.

Lets all hope for the best on Sunday and the weathermen being wrong once again...and HOPE for an early Christmas present or a late Hanukah gift of SNOW!

Everybody that has been to Hunter lately...you know how good it has been. For the ones that have not yet been up....what are we waiting for? Make some plans to get up here over the holidays. Give yourselves a special present: a skiing and boarding trip to Hunter. We have and will have great conditions for you, so see you soon.

Merry Christmas,
The Snowmakers

Snowmaking Update: Wednesday!

We shut down this morning with a inversion temps up top were 29 and about 24 at the bottom so with those temps and the forecast we gave up. The weather does not look like it will cooperate the next few days...then again, it keeps changing everyday so nobody really knows what's up until it
happens.

As of now we will start up tomorrow at some point in the day, we will try to get more opened up in Hunter One, build up some trails and look for a good forecast with some cold weather so we can move to K27, then either Annapurna or 44........ all depends on Mother Nature. The riding and skiing is really good--nothing like last year--so get up here and give it a try!

Snowmaking Update: Monday

Burrrrrrrrr, it's cold! So with this new cold front we have the guns are blasting all sorts of snow everywhere the conditions are fantastic with the last 2 weather makers. Sunday even though it sleeted it really helped us out with the front moving in the winds really picked up so that kept everything from blowing away.

Here we go for snowmaking: Claires, Upper Xover, Racers, loading up the halfpipe, and expanding the terrain over in Hunter One that includes the Highlands, Briar Patch, and Rip Van Winkle. Along with the new stuff we are building up the base and making more powder all over so the conditions will be sweet. Bundle up and get out here and don't miss the great times up here...lets not wait! We are in great shape with a lot of room to yourselves on the slopes.

Storm Update: Sunday Afternoon

Hello everyone, and thanks to those of you who came out to ski or ride this weekend! As many of you know, the quad as been up and running all weekend and we are glad we could fix it in time for everyone.

For those of you who didn't come up (and those of you who did), I wanted to give everyone an update on this storm. There was a lot of "freezing rain" and "rain" forecasted for the area, and we have been watching the snow/sleet mix all day, which, as imagined, has created really nice powder conditions on the mountain.

There has been no wet moisture and temps haven't dropped below 28. Around 5pm today, the sleet is supposed to switch to snow, which allows for another powder day or two early this week. We've been super lucky with the storm as far as conditions are concerned and sometimes the forecasts can differ from what's really happening....so there's the real deal!

Saturday, December 15, 2007

Snowmaking Update: Saturday

Right now we are making snow on Claire's, Colonels alt, Whitecloud, Upper X-over, Racers, Rip's in Hunter One. If everything goes as planned we should have Claire's, White Cloud, Upper X-over, a good chance with the Alternate, and a very slim to none on Racer's for Sunday.

ooks like we will shut down on Sunday due to the weather, but we will start back up Monday morning with a very cold forecast for the beginning of next week. This will allow us to make some moves and get some more new terrain opened up maybe like K27 steeps possibly Purna, and loading up the terrain park but lets see what happens.

Anyway the snow is great with lots of terrain opened up, the Quad is running so everything is good....with that, boot up and make some turns!

Updates & News

Hello everyone! It's been a fantastic Tuesday here at Hunter, with great conditions and occasionally sunny blue skies. There hasn't been any precipitation since Sunday night's storm, and if you take a look at the NOAA forecast, nothing treacherous is heading our way, despite "three day winter storm warnings." Tomorrow mid-morning and afternoon, the clouds will clear and we'll have some blue skies and sunlight.

There's another storm heading towards the Northeast for the weekend, so it looks like we may get some snow out of it.

Some of you may appreciate this photo...

As for conditions, we will be grooming either tonight or tomorrow morning. 30 trails were open and 4 lifts were running today, after grooming of all open terrain last night.

Many of you have asked me about road conditions and driving, and the roads are fine, and probably will be no issue tomorrow. Some of the lots here (paid parking, etc) are a bit icy so please be careful unloading and walking through the lots, though the main lot and bus lot are fine. If you are driving up and concerned about the roads, you can call the operator at 800-HunterMtn and she will tell you what she can.

The quad is still not operational, but F and B are running fine and people are pleased with the conditions...check back for more updates as the week continues! Tomorrow afternoon or evening, we are planning on starting up snowmaking again, too.

Snowmaking Update: Saturday Night

Here is the latest news on snowmaking: the plan will be to start up around 4:00 and hope for a good night we will be going on Claire's (bottom), Gun Hill, Dropoff, B Flats, and other locations around to build the Base and improve the conditions to near perfection.

The skiing today was great so if you missed out that is to bad, if you did miss out lets get up here and make some turns...it is really good. Snowmaking for the upcoming week is up and down there is some funky weather moving in so it will be tough to predict when and where we will be going more on a day by day thing.

Hi everyone -- sorry for the late update, but a lot is going on up here at Hunter. The West Side will be open this weekend, but Claire's will not be open tomorrow top to bottom -- the only West Side trail we have right now is Way Out.

Consumer Demo Weekend kicks off at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, the sushi bar is opening...all that good stuff. See below for further details, but the weather looks good, though it will be in the 30's. The terrain park will also be open tomorrow, with a number of features. An area Dine-Around will be taking place on Sunday, December 9 from 1-5pm. The Dine-Around features seven local restaurants, including Hunter Mountain's Van Winkle's. Tickets can be purchased at the front desk of the Kaatskill Mountain Club, the Catskill Mountain Foundation Bookstore, and other areas, and are $20 in advance, or $25 day of event. Tuesday Snowmaking Update

Another message from Snowmaking, and a video:

Sorry, but it looks like ol' Mother Nature is not going to do what they said she was going to do, so Claire's does not look good for this weekend...but you will have Wayout ready to go Wednesday. We will have Heuga and Dropoff ready by the weekend.

On Wednesday we will have Upper K27, East Side, Milky Way, and Gateway. So it is starting to really shape up with some really good skiing the snow is really nice today a little windy but not that bad. Until tomorrow....

Sunday, December 02, 2007

Snowmaking: Sunday/Monday Update

Sunday - Snowmaking is shut down for the day and night. We will start up mid-day on Monday. We shut the guns off due to the in coming weather even though now they are saying it will be all snow the temps and humidity will not be all that great for snowmaking.

Monday a big cold front is moving in, so here is the plan: Upper k27, East Side, Milky Way, Gateway, possibly Heuga and Dropoff...in the long range looks like we will start Claire's up on Wednesday so by next weekend we will have Claire's and Way Out.

- Bruce

Saturday, December 01, 2007

Snowmaking: Morning Update

Okay here is the scoop. It finally looks like Mother Nature is going to give us a break with the weather, a little burp on Sunday of snow & ice then back to snow depending on the line...we hope to get 6".

Monday we will start back up again and as of now we will be going to the West Side with Wayout, and Upper K27, East Side, Milky Way, Gateway, and undecided on Heuga depending on the
winds.

As for now we will be opening on Sunday (not a guarantee but 40-50%) Cliff, Bleeker, Ike, Mossy. I said we would open Belt And Minya today and we did so I feel good about the others for tomorrow with the temps predicted.

With this terrain opened and what I hope to open tomorrow this has to be the most terrain opened around. Skiing & boarding will be good to so suck it up, pack up the car and get up here!

Snowmaking: Friday Update

Here's the scoop - Right now we are making snow on the Belt top to bottom, Minya, Lower Xover. We are concentrating on these trail with all we can so that they will be opened up on Saturday.

Saturday we will try our best to get out of everybody's way but this early in the season we still have to take advantage of the weather so there will be some guns on the opened trails. We will move to the terrain park, Ike, Boston Road, and maybe the Cliff or Heuga?? (depends on the wind), if everything goes right.

The weather looks good with some COLD weather so this will give us a big boost in getting more terrain opened.

Forget Christmas shopping at the malls come take advantage of the early season snow with no crowds out there, while your here buy your presents: Big Lift Card, Winter Card, or stop by the ski shop!

- Bruce

ALSO: For those of you who were wondering about the Quad, it's currently operating and has been repaired. Thanks for your patience!

Wednesday Snowmaking Update

Last night the weatherman's prediction was a little off. The low temps on top hit this morning at 6:00 am with a low of 21, the bottom hit a frigid 28 so with that it was not a very stellar night.

Up and coming we will start up again Thursday with predictions of some cold air moving in after a brief warm-up Wednesday night, the plan remains the same get more terrain opened: Minya, Lower Xover, Mossy And The Belt .

Lets hope that Mother Nature will gives us a break when and if she does we are ready to move. If anybody out there knows any dances or spells for cold weather, lets do it...we need some Help with the weather!

Snowmaking Update

Bruce, our snowmaking manager and unofficial video correspondent, sent a message over for posting today...here it is!

Well we survived the rains that Heinz field in Pittsburgh could not, yes we lot some snow but we are still in great shape and recovery will be quick 1 night and then ready to start the big moves.

Tuesday 27th we will be starting up in the afternoon as the temps drop hopefully we will be up and running by 4:00 PM. Tonight we will be on HBK and off Broadway, Madison, Mossy.

The weather for tonight will be cold enough to resurface what we have with some powder and position us for the next big moves, which will be on Thursday. The temps on Wed. are not good so we will start up on Thursday.

The next move we will be going to the Belt, Minya, Lower Xover, Ike.

This hopefully will all be opened by Saturday if the Mother Nature gives us a break. The long range looks good and with this we will be able to really start getting some terrain opened up.

So get ready.

Lifts, Trails & Conditions

Tonight's Rail Jam is ON!

Just a quick note to everyone, tonight's Rail Jam WILL be taking place from 5-8pm. The rails will be put up during the day, and the event is free, but registration is required.

Today: Hunter One, Tomorrow: Off-Broadway, Madison and more!

Good morning everyone!

I wanted to post some photos from I took early this morning, and also give you the info about snowmaking for today, tonight and tomorrow.

We're blowing in the same areas at the moment, as it is very cold and perfect snowmaking weather. The weather still looks good, but snowmaking will probably only be at night during the week, as day temps are in the high 30's and low 40's.

The below photos are snowguns on Hunter One.

Later this afternoon or tonight, weather permitting, snowmaking will continue through the night, and for tomorrow, there's a good possibility of having the Off Broadway, Madison, and maybe even Mossy Brook open.

A Fantastic Friday at Hunter Mountain!

We have had an amazing Friday here at Hunter, and are now making snow on Kennedy, Hunter One, Madison and Mid-station. We plan to run the guns right through to tomorrow, and keep them going as long as possible.

C-Lift/Hunter One

There is a very good possibility of running C Lift tomorrow, and the Quad and F-lift will be running as well....Kennedy will be open as long as temps stay down tonight (here in Hunter, we're looking at a night time low of between 10 and 15 degrees!).

Guns on Hunter One, mid-morning.

I got some pretty cool shots today (among them are the ones in this post, all taken around 10am this morning). Remember: if YOU have a great photo of Hunter, send it in! Also check back, as our webmaster Steve has taken a bunch of photos every day and posted them on the site.

See more photos of snowmaking, the trails, the resort and more on the main page of the website, or in the gallery!

Check back tomorrow or call the Snowphone later (800-HunterMtn) for updated conditions...the forecast is looking excellent for the weekend, and I hope everyone had a really excellent Thanksgiving!

This weekend: Colder Temps, More Terrain, Live Entertainment & More!

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving from Hunter! Yesterday's opening day was fantastic, and we'd like to thank everyone who came out to ski or ride. The snow is still in good condition, despite the balmy weather, and we're going to make more snow and open more terrain as soon as temps lower (tonight) and possibly have more terrain for the weekend.

The current NOAA forecast shows that temperatures will drop into the low 20's and as low as 11 degrees on Friday night....so think snow(making)!

Head over to the Hunterblog or the website for photos and video from yesterday!

This weekend, we're also going to have extended bar hours and live entertainment: on Saturday, Paradise Alley will be performing from 4-7pm in the Main Bar area. The bar will be open until 8pm, and if you like the band, head over to O'Neill's for their second performance, kicking off at 10pm and ending at 1am!

We here at Hunter plan to host plenty of live entertainment through the season, so keep checking back for an entertainment listing, or continue to Paradise Alley's website to read more about them!!

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more info!

Another video!

Some more shots from today, from Bruce...we've had an amazing opening day, and thanks so much to everyone who came out!

Some shots from opening day!

It's a great opening day here at Hunter Mountain...temps are in the high 40's, but thanks to our Snowmakers, their decision to make snow from summit to Mid-Station was a great one, and we haven't lost much cover, if any! Our base depth exceeds 48," so there is plenty of snow for everyone!

Enjoy the photos, and keep checking back for more updates!

Snowflakes in Hunter!

Hello again everyone! For the last two days, the area has seen numerous periods of flurries, some even lightly blanketing the ground with snow.

If you check the NOAA forecast, you will see that there is snow likely throughout the rest of the week, and the weather is definitely cooling down (it is currently 37 degrees).

Check back soon for more updates!

What everyone's wondering!

Hello everyone! As the weather gets progressively colder, and the season lurks closer and closer, more people ask me when the resort will open. At present time, everyone gets the same answer: keep an eye on the weather, and keep checking back. At this particular time, we do not have a set opening date, and it's too soon to tell when the weather will turn to become continuously cold.

I will say that NOAA's forecast this morning showed a chance of snow showers in the area starting Wednesday and continuing through the week. We will certainly not be opening this week, but residents may see a few puffs of white when we test our snowmaking system...so keep a look out.

Next week, I'll probably update the Snow Phone, so that will be another source of information as we get closer and closer to our opening day. In the meantime, check out the new website, pick up a Winter Card, and keep on keepin' on!
