I'm surprised you don't keep a secondary website available, even if it just has a single page on it indicating that your main site is down. That would be much better than just having everyone's browser "fail" to reach the main site with no way to know what happened.

You can pay an hosting site no more than $5 to $10 per month for such things.
That is what I have done for my company so that customers would know what's going on. Very inexpensive "insurance".
