Hunter Mountain Goes Pink in Support of the Shred the Love Campaign
Hunter Mountain will be “going pink” for the week of February 27th through March 4th in an effort to support fundraising and awareness through the Shred the Love Campaign and Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC). Throughout the week, guests of Hunter Mountain will have the opportunity to add $1 or more to their lift ticket purchase, as well as purchase various B4BC merchandise. The proceeds will go to help fund breast cancer research, awareness and prevention. On March 3rd through 4th, B4BC’s Check One, Two® traveling outreach group will be on-site providing peer-to-peer breast health education and preventative information.
B4BC is a non-profit organization founded to advocate early detection and a healthy active lifestyle as the best means of breast cancer prevention. The Shred the Love Campaign, originated by B4BC seeks to unite the board sport community through this message. The campaign has doubled in size in its second year, and mountain resorts, campuses and community organizations across the country are hosting events and fundraising activities to help spread the message and raise funds to support the efforts in awareness and prevention of breast cancer.
“We here at Hunter really understand and support B4BC’s message of a healthy, active winter lifestyle,” explains Gerry Tschinkel, Hunter Mountain’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We are happy to show our support to such a great organization with a very important message, while encouraging people to ride.”

Thursday's a Snow Day in Union Square, NYC!
Thursday, February 9, 2012
The Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), Ski Areas of New York (SANY), and I Love New York are bringing in tons of snow to Union Square to remind New Yorkers that the mountains of New York are covered with fresh and man-made snow. This snow day, Thursday, February 9th, is being hosted to encourage New Yorkers to get out and enjoy the outdoors during the winter months.
ORDA will be trucking in and blowing tons of fresh snow, utilizing the latest snow-making technology to create this incredible winter wonderland. This Union Square event will feature:
• Burton Riglet Park, where children ages three to six can test ride snowboards and learn the basics of snowboarding; instructors will tow kids on snow features and around obstacles to introduce them to the fun of snowboarding.
• Fresh from receiving a bronze medal for his video part in Winter X Games Real Snow, professional snowboarder Pat Moore will be on-site to talk about snowboarding. Pat holds "Highest Air" honors in the quarterpipe at the Oakley Stylemasters in China, the Abominable Snow Jam and the U.S. Open. Flying in style won him "Best Trick" for a massive 20-foot McTwist at the Arctic Challenge.
• Red Bull’s street team will be giving away a pair of custom skis, movies, shirts, and more.
• Skiing and snowboarding experts from ORDA, I LOVE NY, SANY/I SKI NY, Hunter, Gore, Whiteface, Windham, Belleayre and Mountain Creek will be available to talk about the quality and technological advances of snowmaking, New York’s 50-plus ski destinations and New York’s winter activities across the state.

A few words on winter.
Meanwhile, back here in the marketing office, I see another handful of news articles and television clips regarding the lack of snow and the suffering of ski resorts.
Admittedly, Hunter is included in a select few of said stories. Though, to the surprise of many writers and anchors, we are quick to admit we're suffering from a distinctly different problem: we don't have such terrible news at all. And here's why, for those of you who are wondering what we all think about the weather-driven doom and gloom we're all hearing about:
As I type this, Hunter has 29 trails open. Hunter One, the main mountain and the West Side are open, plus park features (and a progression park, too!). 9 lifts have been operating for the Christmas/New Years holiday week. Snowtubing is open. All of our learning programs are operating. We've got NASTAR, events, live entertainment and most importantly people are here, and they are psyched to be skiing and riding.
As of today, Hunter has more trails open than Whiteface, Sugarloaf and Mount Snow, plus all of our immediate neighbors. Our snowmakers worked through the coldest night we've had yet (last night), and we have every intention of continuing to crank our compressors and snowguns whenever temperatures permit. For those of you who are not aware, we don't need snow. We just need cold. Hunter's snowmaking power allows for such recovery that the lack of snow is completely irrelevant to our operation.
What is most important is that our customers -- the thousands of people who have come to ski and ride so far this season -- are excited. We all want to enjoy the winter conditions, and Hunter has some of the best anywhere. We're aiming to please, and we can assure you that we will continue to open more terrain, and serve up the most awesome snow conditions anywhere around... we hope you can keep some of our positive attitude amidst all the moaning and groaning about the weather!
We hope to see you for New Years, and we welcome any questions or concerns you may have. Ask anyone here, out on our slopes, poke around our Facebook page or give us a call... we don't have much to complain about at Hunter Mountain, nor do our customers.
Have a great day and we hope to see you soon!
In the short term, we have a few mid-temperature days with cold nights coming this weekend... next week, nighttime temps plunge into deep freeze. Stay tuned!

Sunday Sunday Sunday!
- We'll have top-to-bottom skiing and riding. We are making snow on the Belt, though we do not know if it will be ready for tomorrow yet. The Kaatskill Flyer will be the primary lift, with a possibility of running D-Lift for intermediates (and those of you who need a break from Hellgate!)
- We are priming Hunter One, but it will not be open tomorrow. As stated above, Midstation may be available for intermediates via D-Lift.
- Mike and the park crew put some rails and boxes out, so those will remain for tomorrow.
- Pricing is $36 for adults, $27 with the Big Lift Card.
- Don't forget that if you're skiing and riding today, keep your ticket, and you can get a $26 ticket tomorrow! $10 off a full price ticket when you show your lift ticket from today.
- Shane is shooting our weekly video today and tomorrow, so if you want to tell everyone how awesome we are, look for him. Your face in our weekly video. Sounds good right?
In terms of snowmaking, nighttime temps are looking great tonight, with some tomorrow night and Monday night strong possibilities as well. We're going to open as quickly as mother nature allows. There are some raging parties in town tonight, and Solid Smoke is playing at the Main Bar (see below). Thanks for reading and keep checking back!

Hunter Mountain eNews 12/8: We're opening Saturday!
WE ARE OPENING SATURDAY!
We would like to let you know that due to recent snowfall and decent nighttime temps for snowmaking, we will be opening on Saturday!
At this point it is looking like we will use the Flyer to up/download for F-Lift, so we will at the very least be open mid- to summit. If we get some really good temps and make a lot of snow, we will obviously open top to bottom. We will do whatever Mother Nature allows, so things may change between now and Saturday in terms of open terrain. We are *hoping* to have Hellgate-Broadway-Kennedy (otherwise known as HBK or Mainline) top-to-bottom open for Sunday, and the nighttime temps look good.
We'll have pricing up on our website tomorrow, and we'll have some info from Bruce as snowmaking continues to spread out. We're also planning on getting a trail open around C-Lift so some Hunter One terrain will be available for Sunday.
Again, terrain availability is based on snowmaking and temperatures, but we will be open on Saturday... you can count on that. Stay tuned here and on Facebook for updates. And while you're waiting, you can watch the snowmaking video we shot last week:
More info soon.

Hunter Mountain’s West Side Quad to be named Zephyr Express
The Zephyr Express, which began its life as Hunter’s Snowlite Express, was refurbished during the 10/11 season. The quad will replace the Y-Lift on the West Side, which services Hunter’s expert terrain and is a haven for mogul and steep pitch skiers and riders. Some of Hunter’s most famous trails, including Annapurna, are located on its West Side.
The progress of the lift installation has been covered on Hunter’s Facebook page and in the Hunterblog, located at HunterMtn.blogspot.com. The Zephyr Express will be finished on time and ready to open for the 11/12 winter season. The capacity of the lift will be 2400 per hour, an upgrade from 1900 per hour, the capacity of Y and Z lifts combined. Z Lift will be used as a backup lift to provide extended capacity.
“We know many of our guests have waited patiently for a high speed detachable on Hunter West,” explains Russ Coloton, President of Hunter Mountain. “We’re happy to be able to give our dedicated expert skiers and riders a smoother, faster ride back to the top of the West Side.”
Follow Hunter’s lift construction via Facebook or blog at Facebook.com/pages/Hunter-Mountain/ or HunterMtn.blogspot.com.

Ooohhh YEAH... new VanWinkle's menu. Photos + info.
I posted a ton of photos on the Hunter Mountain Facebook Page, but to give you a quick recap, we received four appetizers, and four entrees. Our appetizers were all new items to the summer menu: sea scallops and watercress, roasted portabella mushroom and goat cheese overlaid with asparagus, a colossal crabcake (it really is colossal) and caprese. All were outrageously delicious... the crabcake was utterly fantastic, and I am not a crabcake person. These are all light, healthy (well... I beg to differ on the crabcake but it's seafood at least!) and fresh.
I will admit that I am a notoriously health conscious eater, and in the past, VanWinkle's offerings had not been my cup of tea. I'd drive off the mountain for light, inventive fare (and vegetarian options) at other regional eateries: New World, Peekamoose, Aromathyme, The Artist's Palate. After eating at VanWinkle's on Wednesday night I can tell you I'll be staying up here! Who needs to drive anywhere when there's watermelon feta salad?!
![]() | ![]() |
For entrees, we received the evening's special, red snapper over yellow rice; salmon in orange-ginger glaze; a watermelon feta salad I knew I wanted from the moment I saw it on the menu; and mind-blowing mushroom ravioli. Both fish dishes were delicious, and any time the snapper comes back on the menu... ORDER IT! In the meantime, I suggest you tide yourself over with the mushroom ravioli. Normally a heavier dish soaking in cream sauce, Tim's ravioli has huge chunks of mushrooms, and is coated in a brown butter sauce. Check it out below... the big chunks of mushrooms give it an amazingly meaty texture.
![]() | ![]() |
The watermelon feta salad was weird and awesome... not a combination I've ever had before (or thought to combine), dressed with limoncello vinaigrette. Incredible.Dessert included a ricotta-honey cheesecake (if you're shaky on the texture of ricotta cheese, order it anyway. You will not be disappointed!) as well as the mini tartlet and a Victorian chocolate cup.
Check out the photos, the menu, and then head up there. We've got a new Foursquare special launching tomorrow, so make sure you check in when you get there!! We hope to see you soon... and PLEASE feel free to post your own amazing food shots on our Facebook page! As a devotee of healthy, slow, local and organic, VanWinkle's new menu has some incredible offerings for the pickiest of eaters. Come on up!
